Physician to Physician Discussions > Advice for a Dermatology Resident: How to learn cosmetics?
I assume you will be working with some derms in private practice. Try to choose those that offer cosmetic treatments. This will hopefully give you a chance to do some of the cosmetic services prior to finishing residency.
You should think about joining the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS). There are many derms that belong. This would allow you to create relationships with some of the top cosmetic derms in the country.

I'm currently a 1st-year dermatology resident at a program that does not really offer any training in the cosmetic side of things. I am interested in ultimately opening/joining a private derm practice that incorporates cosmetics (maybe 50/50), not a medspa. But, the subject of cosmetics seems to be somewhat taboo amongst the academics. How would you advise somebody in my position to go about pursuing this? Am I at a disadvantage coming from a program that doesn't offer the training? Should I expect to learn it by joining a practice with other physicians who will teach me or will I need to shell out money to attend seminars and conferences? Should I start doing anything during residency? Should I pursue a procedural dermatology fellowship to learn the more extensive procedures? Thanks in advance!
