Physician to Physician Discussions > "Doctor" of Nurse Practice taking OVER!

It seems that the nurses trying to take over and Forbes has said they offer more than a physician can in primary care. Here is a thread on another forum that shows medical students and residents discussing the ONLINE courses that get you a DNP http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=583650

Am I actually reading this correctly............ Doctor of Nurse Practice....... you have got to be kidding me. This has to be one of the biggest scams ever.........How many patients actually look at the "Dr's" credentials......not many.......this is just going to mislead them.

It is very misleading. In a recent survey of the general public, 85% thought podiatrists are physicians, 70% thought optometrists are physicians and 58% thought psychologists are physicians. Now, these "Doctor" of nursing will have NO oversight from a physician, be considered "primary care providers" and introduce themselves as Doctor. Patients won't know, that's for sure.

why shouldn't a nurse be allowed to continue her education to a Phd level in education or research? Yes she would be addressed as Dr but no different from other Phd programs. A Phd in English still earns the right to be addressed as Dr. that does not mean that they will be practicing medicine.

Ok may be confused on this matter, but here is my two cents on how it works. Not condoning the title just the concept behind it.

An MSN can take two roads to "Dr hood". One is the get a Phd. in Nursing which means he or she can teach, go into admin or some other non clinical area. (counting research as non clinical just because it isn't the emptying bedpan kind of patient care clinical ). Or, he/she can get the DrNP (not sure if you can go MSN to DrNP or if you have to go MSN to NP to DrNP) degree which allows them, with a collaborative agreement, to become a primary care provider as a nurse practitioner who has taken another step in their education and increased their knowledge base.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

You might as well call this site medical spam for the way they let people slander others

It is different because the English PhD doesn't walk into a patient's room with a long white coat and say "Hi, I'm Dr. Smith. I'll be treating you today"
