Physician to Physician Discussions > Physician needs advice Vis a Vis equipment/ Marketing

I have a small medical practice In Rhode Island. I started doing aesthetic procedures earlier this year. I havent had much luck though. Good thing that I didnt buy the expensive equipment yet. I have been using a company that provides lasers but shares revenue . I have barely done 10 procedures in about 8 months. Most of patients are old and they certainly dont need any aesthetic stuff when they actually struggle to pay for their prescriptions. All of the patients that i did procedures one were my own patients. I did advertise in a local journal but all I got was calls from other vendors trying to sell lasers or advertising space.

At this point the company that is providing me with lasers wants to back off. I understand their position. They are not making any money. I do not want to give up yet partly because I didnt put full effort in marketing and partly because I know economy isnt greatest at the moment --so great success isnt expected .

I talked to the tech who has been doing the lasers on my patients. He said all I needed was Candela's gentle yag and a palmolar product for pigmented lesions ( cant recollect the name)
The guy is very experienced and I was almost convinced that my search for the equipment was done. And then I came across this website.

it seems Candela's gentle yag may not be answer to all the problems. I actually came across a great deal for gentle yag recently. I didnt buy it because guy said it could be used for hair removal only. Does that mean that i would need to buy additional hand pieces if I wanted to do vessels. Or is there a difference in the base unit as well.

thanks!

J.C.-- Sometimes when you purchase a long pulsed Nd:YAG laser the purchase will include separate hand pieces for treating hair and blood vessels (or in other units the hand piece has adjustable spot size feature that will enable multi-indication use). If someone is selling a laser with only a single spot size I would shop around more. With some companies the cost of purchasing an additional hand piece separately is ridiculous.

Two excellent points by med spa guy. Firstly watch out for extra handpieces which does get costly, also you really need multiple spot sizes. But I do thing YAG is the way to go due to versatility plus efficacy. I didn't want to be a slave to a laser financially, so I shopped and found a great value in the Aerolase, just one handpiece with 4 spot sizes and no consumables, which I use for hair removal and veins but also for pigmented spots, acne and skin rejuvenation. The nice thing about the versatility of a YAG is that, your average client is bound to have at least 1 or 2 conditions that you can treat with one laser.
