Physician to Physician Discussions > Does any modality really work for white/grey hair?

We gave up on our Syneron Aurora IPL/RF that is supposedly "FDA approved" to remove white/grey/blond hair. It does not work! We use Meladine and our GentleLase in only those desperate enough to undergo endless numbers of treatments (and expensive meladine) for some improvement. Does anyone have any success with another modality?

We had ok. results with the Aurora if we did numrous (4) passes on the area. Obviously that will not work on large area's and that is what they (syneron) do not tell you.

Meladine messy and expensive has never really taken off for obvious reasons. I say stick to what works (dark hair) until the technology is improved upon.

I have had success with the Lumenis LightSheer on thick white/grey chin hairs. Must be skin type 1-3 and you have to turn up the energy and use shortest pulse duration. 40 - 60 mj on auto setting. Must be very careful to provide adequate cooling.

In my opinion, the Lumenis LightSheer is THE BEST laser for Laser Hair Removal. You CAN use it on all skin type and it works !!!!!!!!!!!!!! We use the Cutera Vantage ND:Yag 1064 on African Americans. We use our LightSheer on the thin dark cheek hairs of Southern Asians (Indians) and it works better than any other modality. Must be careful because narrow therapeutic index for these patients (settings for effecive treatment vs settings which cause burns).

In my opinion, there are some lasers that don't work very well for laser hair removal. For example, the Cutera ProWave 770 does not work that well and the Vantage 1064 only works well on thick black hairs. If you have the wrong laser, LHR will drive you crazy and you will not be happy. If you have a laser that works, LHR is lots of fun and very rewarding. There are MANY laser companies that sell Lasers that don't work very well.

Hope this helps

Thanks JEE. Alway good to talk to someone who has been in the industry and truly understands LHR. How can you compare an Alexandrite to a Diode.

Thanks

Alex is just as good as Diode. The only problem is that you have to be very careful in skin type 4 and you cannot use it in skin type 5 or 6 (I think). There are other differences. If I were buying a LHR Laser, I would bring in the diode rep and the Alex rep and let them try to convince you to buy their laser. Bring in two other reps as well just to round out the conversation. You will get the point counterpoint from them. Since most areas of this country have a significant portion of the population being "patients of color", I would favor a laser that treated more skin types and ethnicities. Hope this helps. I use my ND:Yag 1064 for african americans, so I am not sure how well the diode works in this population. The company will telll you it works, but you have to use a long pulse duration (100 - 400 ms).
