Physician to Physician Discussions > Proper treatment endpoint for laser procedures

I had a pleasure of working with a few physicians recently during a hands on workshop hosted by Sciton. A very good question arise from the physicians. What is the proper end point for laser treatments? What is considered undertreatment / overtreatment?
1. Hair Removal?
2. Freckle treatment?
3. Photorejuvenation?
4. Pigment treatment?

My answer to the above questions are
1. Hair removal endpoint: mild erythema (E1) of the hair follicle and its surrounding tissue. Curling of the attached hair.
2. Freckle treatment: IPL treatment targeted toward freckles should see moderate erythema (E2) and the surfacing and darkening of the freckles.
3. Photorejuvenation: IPL or 1064 ND YAG laser should see mild erythema (E1-E2)
4. Pigment treatment: Q switched 1064 ND YAG laser should see darkening, crusting or the pigmented area with mild petechiae from the surface of the lesion.

You can select pretty much any paramenter within the manufacturer's safety recommendation. But you must reach end point to see result.
Remember to using any cooling measure you can either precool or post cool to prevent any blister formation. Advise all patients to follow a strict sun screen regime.

Anyone have other or better recommendation for proper end point of common laser /IPL treatments?
