Physician to Physician Discussions > Pre-owned lasers??

We have a medical/aesthetic practice and include injectables (botox, fillers, sclerotherapy), microderm, ALA-PDT for acne and SR, and have a fairly wimpy IPL. We are looking to expand and fill in the gaps for hair removal and wrinkle/acne scars and are considering sinking more investment into a more powerful IPL. Also, a 1064 Nd Yag would be a nice augment to the injectable sclerotherapy. And as we have patient demand, we'd like to also add fractional resurfacing. We have had demo's on the Fraxel Re:store, Lumenis Active FX, Cutera Pearl & Titan, and the Palomar Starlux 500 with all the "heads". For an upgrade IPL, 1064 Yag, and a fractional NON-ablative system, we are looking at well over $250,000. (retail) in equipment upgrades for our practice. We are in a fairly competitive area, and need the machines to meet the demands of our patients, but with the price of the systems... there seems to be an uncertainty of a return on the investment! It would seem I could be working for Fraxel, Palomar & Cutera for quite a while! So, I am curious if anyone has any experience with purchasing pre-owned equipment. Please share any comments, rags to riches success stories or horror stories! Our community hospital opened it's OR with all refurbished equipment to lower their bottom line and were quite successful and now are purchasing new equipment as needed with all the $$ saved.

hi,
i have purchased an ipl (aesthera) that works well for acne because of its suction action and it has various laser filter heads to allow treat of rosacea, melasma, age spots and even hair removal. i also have the mediostar laser hair removal system that has a built in cooling system and another cooling system for patients with sensitive skin. i have a terrific machine for diminishing the appearance of cellulite. my patients go with the laser hair therapy then onto the cellulite treatment so we have a legs and buttocks menu. in addition i have a microdermabrasion to be used in conjunction with chemical peels so we offer chemical peels. this so far, has been my most popular machine. i just had another baby and i can't do this, too much work. i just bought the machines last year and i have a lease on them.i am willing to sell these machines at the cost of the lease. i can't keep up. so if anyone is interested please email me and i can give you the quotes. these machines have been hardly used because i've been busy with the baby and my other children. they are just one year old.
aloha!!

I have an affirm - fraxel - thermage that is a year old. I am looking for someone to assume my lease. Currently I pay $1,698 plus maintenance. I am willing to throw in the chiller as well. It didn't come with it but I am very mutivated to let another medical practice take it over. The machine works GREAT.

What is an affirm-fraxel-thermage? They are all different companies and impossible to be on the same machine.

Where are you based at, Dr. Cindy Goodman?

What happens to the warranty if you transfer the lease to another doctor?

It seems like there are a few of us that are willing to sell equipment at the cost of the lease. I bought 2 candela lasers new when I first started and then the 3rd used online. I was afraid to buy used at first because I wasn't sure if it would be junk without a warranty. I haven't had any problems with the used unit (knock on wood) yet and I saved so so much money. I also have a fraxel restore unit in very good working order but I'd like to sell this one at the cost of the lease because I work in a small town and people can't afford to pay what the treatments are worth in the bigger cities. The ones who have had the treatment, love it but can't afford to complete the series. Anyway, if anyone is interested in my fraxel unit or a microdermabrasion unit, please email me at jackie963@hotmail.com. At this point, I'm not interested in listing with a reselling company and paying out a commission to a middleman.

I am currently looking for a used laser. Starting out to test the waters.

What should one keep in mind when buying a used laser and the like. do the lasers need to be recertified by the manufacturer. How can one make sure that the machines are in good working order to avoid any potential patient harm.

I have a fair amount of experience with both Palomar and Cutera. Both companies will warranty a used 3rd party machine for you ONLY after having the unit "inspected" for 25K +. It is not that diffucult to get the hand peices fixed in the event that they break, but if something breaks within the box then that could prove very difficult to fix at a resonable cost.

Are there any 3rd party companies that service/repair Candela lasers. I would like to start with Candela GentleYag

With so many great deals on used lasers these days, it's tempting to buy new euipment now. Can anyone comment on their experience buying used and whether they were able to get support and service by the company?

I've bought a used Lumenis Lightsheer and have not had any issues with it in 4 years. Although I have not had any support from the company, the machine itself is so reliable that I have not needed any service.

In contrast, buying a used Cutera is much more costly because their lasers require so much maintenance and the Cutera company will only service the machine after you have paid $25k "recertification" fee.

Any experience with buying used Candela, Laserscope/Iridex, Syneron or other manufacturers? Any comment would be appreciated.

Candela will only provided service with an exhorbinant service contract (don't remember the exact cost) but we hava a local company service it.

It is difficult to get service for a used device. I would also suggest the any device that requires ongoing expensive consumables would not be a good buy in the long run.

Hello,
I own a quanta q series plus c that is in perfect working order.
Nd yag q switched w/ ruby. 1064, 532 and 694 wave lengths. Primarily used for tattoo removal. Since it has the ruby in it, it can remove all colors.
My experience with this laser has been outstanding and the clients love it.
For personal reasons, I need to sell it and close my practice and move to another area due to a messy divorce.
Anyways, the laser is outstanding, I can provide references, and it cones with everything it had when it was new, which was in 2009!!!!
Low pulse count!

Hello there,

Number one thing to consider is that you purchase from someone that is reputable and provides training, a warranty and a return policy. Next thing is to locate a service agent for the manufacturer that your interested in. Have them look over the device within your return policy. This will cost a bit more but it gives you peace of mind. I've successfully added pre-owned lasers to over 175 spas. My favorites are Candela for LHR and Medlight for tattoo removal... They are easier to use and less expensive to service. Feel free to contact me directly for pricing if you are interested in purchasing a device... Also feel free to contact me if you are interested in selling me your device.

Happy New Year!

we are opening a asthetic center and are looking for laser . i have found cynosure elite used one with 1yr warranty and option to buy new quanta in 6 months if this dosenot work. this is 6 yr old unit with new flash lamp but has lot of pulse count as it was used for last 6 yr.this one is for $49k.this is quanta company but they have preowned units also.
other option is go with cynosure company for their demo model for $69k again with everything.not sure about pulse count on that. this will be at least 3 yr old.but this doesnot have option to trade in for new one in 6m if doesn't work.
any comments. need to make decision soon.

Hello Sarita,

That sounds pretty expensive for used lasers. I would weight my options wisely.
