is anyone using gentlewaves LED as a stand alone treatment or post-laser/light? Is it worth it? what about with levulan treatments? Or is IPL better with levulan? (I'm not buying DUSA) There's also talk of future hair growth promoting applications according to the rep but I haven't been able to find any info on it. I can't decide if I should get the select model so I can move it around in the spa or the pro for longer levulan and potentially hair growth treatments in the future. Should I buy used or pay a lot more for the warrenty.

JMD: The sweet spot for activating Levulan is about 420nm which is a filter offered by many IPLs. No need to get a Blu-lite (420nm) from dusa unless you tx a lot of acne. The good thing is you can set the timer and come back..also the 420nm wavelength tx's acne w/o levulan (and many insurances will pay for this). About 80% are responders to light alone. Many guys use the gentle waves (I don't have one) to promote healing and collagen remodeling, some throw it (free) after a resurfacing as a "value added" free-bee. Hope that helps

dermarogue: thank you for your help. do you know if the response with levulan activated with an IPL is the same as it being activated with an LED unit? Do you think all the medical LED units would be about the same in efficacy? there's gentlewaves and today I learned of omnilux.

You may have a less vigorous response w/ a given exposure time w/ the LED due to the lower "wattage" compared to the ipl; but you should get adequate and even activation w/ the LED....I'm not sure of the parameters as I don't have a LED.

I have been using the GentleWaves for a few years. It seems to be somewhat helpful in decreasing erythema after IPL treatments. We let about 50 patients get a series of free treatments over 8 weeks. A few said they noticed a substantial improvement in the "texture" of their skin and were very happy. I didn't see any improvement at all. I would have been very embarassed to sell that as a stand alone service. Even placebos work a certain perecentage of the time. We use it as a freebie offer in conjunction with a free consultation and we use it after most of our IPL treatments. We use the Starlux V handpiece for activation of Levulan. I have yet to see any good data on stimulating hair growth with LED therapy. I hope this helps!

The Omnilux units are worth investigating if you're considering LED or just seeking solid information. This company was involved in pioneering this type of treatment...find them on the web and pick up a little history.
