Physician to Physician Discussions > I Need Advice as First Time Laser Purchaser

I am starting a cosmetic dermatology business and am planning to purchase my first laser to treat pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, hair removal, and skin rejuvenation. I want to buy one base unit with several hand pieces to start. A vendor has given me a proposal to purchase a used refurbished Palomar Starlux 500 with 4 hand pieces. The details are listed as:
Manufacturer:Palomar,
Serial Number:55-0246,
Equipment Model:StarLux 500
Manufacture Date:June 2007
Shots on unit:92445
Plug Type: 110 Volt
SWV: 7.20
Handpieces: Lux Rs:
Lux G:
Lux Y:
Lux1540
Additional Accessories: Foot Pedal, Interlock, Key, Cart, Power Cord, Operator Manual,
System Treatment Guidelines, Chiller Fluid, (1) 2PL Operator Eyewear, (1) Patient Eyewear,

The asking price is $70,000. Can you advise me if this is a good deal or not. Is 92,500 shots on the base unit high or low for a 5 year old laser? Will it be a good starter laser?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Personally, I feel that $70k for a used Starlux 500 is not a good deal. I would suggest that you look at Sciton's line. I made a purchase of Sciton after reading a number of reviews/feedback on this site and I haven't regretted my purchase. Choosing teck is one of your most important decisions. I'd also suggest that you read the free reports in the free area of this site for some feedback on customer service and support from all of the tech companies. An informed decision is always in your best interest. Also... don't rush.

Dito to what CarltonMD said. Especially the 'don't rush' part. I wish that Medspa MD had a select partner that dealt with used cosmetic lasers since I'm a big user of the other services and could use some deals on technology from a vetted source. (Hear that Jeff?)

I hear you Dermgal. Actually, we are actively looking for and receptive to finding a used cosmetic laser partner for our community that can meet everyone's needs. When we find one we'll be sure to let everyone know.

I think the Palomar 500 platform is a great starter system. But, I agree that the price seems to be a bit steep.

OK, and thanks very much for your comments. Sounds like either the Palomar or a Sciton laser would be a good initial investment. Is there a particular Sciton laser I should be looking for, such as the Joule? And yes, I will take my time and do a lot of investigating. And you are right - I have looked at a lot of websites of companies who advertise used cosmetic lasers for sale but I don't know if I can trust any of them to tell me the truth since they all want my money. But I will look for other Palomar 500's at lower prices. Thanks for your advice.

@planobobt, Please let us know what you find, and what you decide. I for one will be very interested.

Don't forget to factor in how much it costs when the system breaks. The recertification charges from both companys are expensive. And the one thing about buying a system that is absolutely a 100% guarantee....it WILL break.
