Physician to Physician Discussions > Laser Hair Removal: How young is too young?
Recently I have had several clients and friends ask if my office will perform laser hair removal on children as young as 11 years old. I personally have not recommended anyone under the age of 16 or 17 to have LHR given the hormonal changes yet to occur with puberty.
Most of the individuals requesting this are from ethnicities where females tend to have a lot of facial and body hair (Indian, Middle Eastern, etc.). These mothers are already taking their daughters for waxing for hair removal, but because of the need to repeat the treatments so frequently and the discomfort, they are looking for a more permanent solution.
I would appreciate insight from the medical community as to the pros and cons.

We don't have a huge Indian or Asian community in my little town, but I can see the need. Some of these girls have more hair on their lips than the guys do. I think it would really need to be on a case by case basis. I personally don't plan on treating anyone under 18 unless it is for acne and a parent is there to sign the paperwork. But if a particularly hairy girl comes in I might cause I remember what it was like being "different" in high school.
