Physician to Physician Discussions > starting a laser tattoo practice

I really hope someone can advise me here. I am physician in my very early 50's. I was a hospital based md for 20plus years and just semi retired. I want to have a practice that would be mine for the first time in my career. These laser spas are all over so i thought i would specialize ( just as i did in my practice) and do just laser tattoo. I have taken courses etc and now that I am looking at rentals ( never had an office etc) im finding rent is running from $1400/mo small office to 5K for a store front, add malparactice and the laser itself at $1600 x 5 years Im wondering if it is all worth it. Does anyone know if there is the demand out there for a practice like this? I know that md in beverly hills seems to thrive but he got lucky with the tv shows and gets alot of exposure. The laser school was very rosey in its outlook . A local spa thought I would be forced to perform other procedures like botox, fillers peels etc. Please let me know if you can. At this point all i have invested is about 8k in classes and I worry about creating a financial drain at a later age.
Thanks
G

Glenn,

I live in a small community and recently introduced Laser Tattoo Removal to my practice. It has been the most popular service that I offer. I can tell you that with any elective cosmetic procedure your success is directly related to your ability to market your product. I have spent the last 5 years actively promoting my services and I have learned that you must be willing to spend quite a bit of money in advertising/marketing. You can absolutely have a thriving practice but you need to be quite savy in how you promote your product. Your goal is to have your name everywhere-print ads, web site, direct mail, newspaper inserts, billboards. Good Luck!

Thank you Gene, I thought this would be an avenue that had less competition. There are a million medspas here but no so many tattoo removal. At a recent conf i asked why this was and they thought that it was the nd-yag laser its cost and relatively decreased versitility. It seemed like a reasonable ans. My fear is to get in over my head with 5k/month expenses and have only a few patients come in. I do plan to advertise and have spoken with alot of the local doctors that I worked with for referals.
Thanks again
Glenn

Why not open up a small medical practice on your own and help people? Your experience and knowledge should be of service to your patients.

I have a few laser centers that offer tattoo removal. There are a TON of people looking for it online. The drawback is most who call in and find out how much it truly costs to remove their drunken night mistake, do not set an appointment to come in.

But then again, all you need is a few paying clients each month to make it all worthwhile.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
