Physician to Physician Discussions > Anybody using Hydrelle?

I am wondering if anyone out there has much experience injecting Hydrelle?I have read alot of info about it, some of which is rather negative. However most of the negative info comes from one site. (http://www.virginiafacialplasticsurgery.com/blog/)
Here is what Dr Schultz from Derm TV had to say about it:

Susan,

I believe Hydrelle is as safe or safer than any other filler on the market. All fillers have a small incidence of complications which your dermatologist should discuss with you before injecting any filler.

Here's to healthy and beautiful skin!

I had Hydrelle injected and have had nothing but complications and hard lumps from the product which I have NEVER had with other fillers. I recommend not using this product at all. There have been numerous other reports of adverse events with Hydrelle. Onset of symptoms appears to be any where from 3 to 5 weeks after injection and most of my complications appeared immediately at injection in one area with a very swollen lip area (3 x the normal size and subsequent lumps which are still being treated now) and now are appearing 5 weeks on other areas of my face which are going under treatment. Consumer beware and check the internet for other reports of adverse events before getting this product injected. Search for the lady who spent 8 days in the hospital from a Hydrelle injection and has had continued issues some 3 months later. Do your research. KV

My friend had hydrell injected 2 days ago to the nasal

04.3 | Unregistered Commenterdebbie

she had hydrell injected into the nasal labial folds 2 days ago., The day following the injectionjs her cheeks swelled up like balloons. Now today she has black eyes. I think the company needs to pull this off the market and warn physicians of the terrible potential side effects. This is a law suit wailting to happen.

In January 2010, my doctor injected Hydrelle a form of Hyalronic acid into the frown lines around my mouth to plump up these areas. She also injected Hydrelle into the sides of my chin area to plump up my skin. For three days, these areas were swollen. At the doctor’s instruction, I iced these areas constantly to try to reduce the swelling.
After two or three week, the left side of my face where the Hydrelle had been injected remained swollen and slightly larger than the other area; therefore, I went back to my doctor. She explained that this was not a problem and prescribed a steroid pack for me. I took the steroids for the prescribed time period.

During the third week of February, I noticed I was having pain around my middle (stomach area) and sides. Touching these areas caused more pain. There was no noticeable swelling or discoloration in these areas. I also noticed that the areas where I was injected with the Hydrell (particularly on my right side) were swelling and becoming very lumpy. I immediately notified my doctor. On Monday, February 22, 2010, I visited with my family doctor. She told me that I had Shingles. She prescribed pain medication and Famciclovir, 500 mg tablets. She also examined the swelling in my face and told me to make an appointment to see my plastic surgeon. I went to work on February 23, 2010, but had to leave early because of the pain around my middle and sides.

On Saturday, March 27, I was experiencing more pain and swelling in my face. I contacted my doctor and saw her in the office to see what was going on with my face. She noticed me immediately that the right side of my face was swollen badly and that I was in great deal of pain. She kept saying that she has never had this happen to a patient before. She decided to use the ultra sound machine to try and determine the problem. The ultra sound showed that I had large pockets of fluid in my face around the areas where she had injected the Hydrell. She immediately determined that she had to drain these pockets of fluid. For the next two hours, I endured sticking large needles into my face to make tracks in the skin to try and drain the product Hydrelle. By the time she finished, my lips were the size of oranges and the right side of my face had doubled in size.

During my visit the doctor informed me that she was able to locate a doctor in Florida who experienced the same problem with the product when he used it on several of his patients. According to the Florida doctor, these patient’s faces and lips became swollen and sore. The product which was supposed to become firm after injection had liquefied four weeks later. The doctor’s patients endured weeks of swelling and pain in the areas he had injected. He also had to extract the product from the areas he injected.

My doctor prescribed an antibiotic for me because she was not sure if the areas were infected. She had her assistant take a culture of the fluid coming from the open tracks in my face. I left the office in a great deal of pain, went home took more pain medicine and iced the infected area. On Tuesday, March 2, 2010, I went back to my doctor. She had to open the tracks in my face to press out more of the Hydrelle product. Again, this was a very painful process. She said the product had to come out of my face. This process went on for over six weeks. I now have dark scars and spots around the sides of my mouth, along side my nose and along sides of my chin areas. I have always been told that I have beautiful skin. Now, thanks to Hydrelle I have noticible scars and dark spots.

I have personally injected Hydrelle into faces. For the information of people who are not familiar with filler injections/ complications: Hydrelle is not indicated for injection into the lips...just like Juvederm Ultra plus. If someone does it, it's their own fault not Hydrelle's. Also I would not inject it into frown lines or crow's feet. If you had complications and long lasting lumps, it could be due to allergy to the product or hyaluronic acid...not necessarily Hydrelle. In any case when it happens, I would best treat it with hyaluronidase injections and local steroid injections...and wait and see. This is a good products with lasting results as good as Juvederm.

Four weeks after being injected this flare up happens. My eyes swelled and I looked like a chipmunk. Miserable experience that I have endured for six weeks now. Hydrelle has taken over my face moving around and causing hard lumps, pain and swelling. I have been injected five times with hyralaunadaise sp? to still have lines of this filler under my skin. Who knows whats next. I have a dark spot under my eye now and am hoping only one more painful session of needles to endure. I have been in hiding and am hoping things will end up ok. I'm sure I have done some type of damage.

It happened to me. I usually use Restalyne but for some reason my doctor told me that he was having good feedback from clients who used the Hydrelle. I said go ahead. Whatever. I trust your judgement. Well everything was fine until 15 days later. Out of nowhere I started to get swelling all around my mouth...it was very red and itchy. I tried to ignore it...but then I realized that I now looked like the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz!! It looked awful and it felt just as bad. I tried to take things in stride. Called the doctor right away. He had never seen this reaction before...especially 15 days later. He injected me with an antedote that's supposed to immediately take the product out of my face. It didn't work. He also put me on a steroid pack. The swelling went down a bit but it was still very noticable. Then all of a sudden I developed hard pockets of something that I can only imagine was the Hydrelle...solidifying in my face at each injection point. It was very noticable and very hard...very painful. I went back and they put me on an antibiotic...but then the steroids had been finished and I wasn't on them anymore...all of a sudden the redness and swelling came right back. I was the Cowardly Lion all over again. I called the doctor and told him that I needed the steroids again because my face was back to where it was before I took the steroids. I fear that I am going to have to be on the steroids for a very long time because once they're out of my system...the symptoms come back immediately. Now I am in alot of pain. Especially on the left side of my face. The hardness is all purple and so noticable. I tried to ignore it but now its even more painful. Its beginning to affect my sinuses and my teeth. I have a huge ball on the side of my bottom lip that looks and feels like I've been punched in the mouth. I can't take it anymore. I don't know what to do. I am a business woman. I am out with clients all day and I can't hide!
I am so afraid that my face is going to be permanently scarred. I can see it already and I don't touch my face because of the pain and I'm afraid to get an infection...plus the scarring. I'm so upset.
I don't want to blame the doctor because I'm sure he didn't know it would happen but I wish he didn't offer to change my injectables up and use this awful product.
Does anyone know what can be done besides having more needles put into my face and being scarred for life?

So I'm totally sure that this Hydrelle crap is ALIVE!!! After I got my LUMPS extracted w/a needle...and I saw the stuff that came out...which I know is the Hydrelle and not my own tissue by the way...not more than 5 minutes later it CAME BACK!!! The pockets that were filled and then extracted and pushed on...filled right back up again! What the HELL!??? This stuff doesn't go away! Its ALIVE I tell you! When does the nightmare end?? My entire face is still filled with lumps and fluid and I'm bruised all over because of the extraction and pressing to get the poison out...I look like a mess! I'm on steroids and antibiotics and the poison just keeps on coming back!!! Does anyone have a solution to this nightmare? Anything?? I keep telling my doctor that the day they injected the Hydrelle into my face...it solidified and didn't smooth out. Those lumps in my face are the Hydrelle...not an infection, not my own reaction to the stuff. Its the Hydrelle that is stuck in pockets at the injection sights and has solidified into my face for good. Extracting and pushing the stuff out doesn't work. What the hell am I supposed to do? How do we get a class action suit against this company and the FDA???

Hydrelle strikes again. Thought I was on the down side of the Hydrelle Hell and had a bump pop up under my eye and then my eye area swoll - back on antibiotics and now a bump on the other side of my face popped up this morning. My Doctor who is working with me is great. Hydrelle is the worst product and Coapt Systems is accountable even though they have stuck their head in the sand. I will be so glad when the poison is out of my system for good. Coapt Systems step up and do the right thing by the patients who were injected with your faulty product.

I did Hydrelle twice.

During my 1st treatment, Hydrelle was injected into my Nasolabial folds (smile lines) and the marionette lines (below the sides of the lower lip). It looked good during the 1st two weeks, then during weeks three and four there was occasional swelling and subsiding. At the end of week 4, it swelled while I was at work and wouldn’t stop. I was distressed and when I went to sleep that night, I wondered if I would have a balloon face in the morning. Instead, when I awoke it was perfect. I hadn’t looked this good since I was in my thirties. This excellent result lasted for about 2 to 3 months with occasional mild swelling and subsiding as Hydrelle absorbs moisture.

I returned for a 2nd treatment in the same areas. This time at two weeks after the injections, two lumps suddenly formed. One large lump was located to the left of my lips at the nasolabial fold and the second smaller lump was below my lower lip on the left side. I didn’t want to wait for several weeks for my body to reabsorb the Hydrelle. My dermatologist suggested injecting Hyaluronidase enzyme into only the larger lump. It worked and the lump subsided within a couple of days. The smaller lump started to subside without treatment within 3 to 4 weeks.

Hydrelle is a wonderful product that produces great results but the potential side effects make it risky to use. The dermatological center that I visit has discontinued its use due to my results. I have considered seeing another dermatologist to have Hydrelle treatments but the experiences that these other patients endured worries me.

I had 4 injections of Radiesse, followed later by several injections of Hydrelle and Botox a few months ago. The Radiesse just seemed to disappear, which is why my doctor then chose to use Hydrelle. Since then, I have had a rough, hoarse throat. I have been to my family doctor several times to try to find the problem, but have had no success. I am now wondering if it could be caused by the Hydrelle injections, or possibly by the combination of injections or even the injections combined with my blood pressure medications. Has any one else had any similar issues????
