IPL & Cosmetic Laser User Groups > Laser for brand new tattoo?

People may want a brand tattoo removed immediately after it's done. I wonder how long (weeks/months) they should wait for laser tattoo removal. There are different answers on the Net, a bit confusing.

Don't touch a new tattoo for 6 months. Bridget

why 6 months Bridget?

I have told my clients 8 weeks.... no problems so far.

I have done some research since I posted my question ages ago.

New tattoo takes about 2 months to set, so it's OK to treat after 2 months. However the energy should be as low as possible as skin damage can take up to 6 months to complete. This is why some people suggest wait for 6 months

Posters need to realize that we are not all in the same country, and the same recommendations, guidelines, and standards of safety don't apply in every country. In the US, if a patient gets a tattoo, and has it removed 2 months later with a laser, and that laser causes damage to the skin- sometimes permanent damage, the practitioner may be sued for malpractice. Simply checking good business practices, or what others generally recommend- erring on the side of safety, could prove detrimental against someone recommending or performing procedures while erring on the side of profits. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but that's how most lawsuits are viewed and settled.

My correction:
"as skin damage can take up to 6 months to complete": should be:

as the skin injury caused by tattoo procedure can take up to 6 months to heal completely. This is why some people suggest wait for 6 months.

nobody wants to see ugly scarring.

If you are not sure that means you REALLY DO NOT KNOW, THEREFORE, YOU ARE "EXPERIMENTING" ON A HUMAN and you need his/her permission with signed statements that he/she agrees to let you do this. You are talking about SURGERY. TATTOO REMOVAL IS PLASTIC SURGERY, that is why SOME PLASTIC SURGEONS DO THIS (NOT ALL). Are you LICENSED TO PRACTICE MEDICINE?
If you were a doctor, you would not even ask that question because MEDICAL ETHICS would guide your decision. If you do not know, DON'T DO IT.

HAVE YOU BEEN PRESENT TO WATCH MORE THAN ONE TATTOO REMOVAL? Do you know the difference between how many joules are needed for different colors and different areas? How much should you do at one visit? What is the difference of settings needed for various areas of the skin? DON'T BE STUPID. YOU WOULD GO TO A PLASTIC SURGEON TO REMOVE YOUR TATTOO. This means you know there is extra risk if you do it, consequently, this is a double standard, one for you and a different one for me. THAT IS NOT ETHICAL AND ILLEGAL IF YOU ARE NOT A LICENSED PHYSICIAN. GREED IS NOT GOOD. IF YOU DO IT, I CAN NOT WISH YOU LUCK BECAUSE LUCK AIN'T THE ANSWER. EXPERIENCE IS. I HOPE YOU MAKE A WISE DECISION.

THINK ABOUT IT.... lasers work on the basis of the COLOR of the TARGET, the tattoo. However, the tattoo usually has multiple colors. You might be able to affect one color but not the others and you have to tell the patient in ADVANCE but you do not know, DO YOU? Contact the manufacturer of the laser and ask them about this. A black ink from one manufacturer is different than the same color from a different manufacturer. Different reds also require different lasers. Various yellows may require a different laser. I know this and I DO NOT DO ANY LASER TREATMENTS BECAUSE I HAVE NO INSURANCE TO DO THIS. How DEEP IS THE TATTOO? Can your device reach that depth? Unless you know more than what you imply... I would SUE YOUR _SS.
Insurance will not cover you if you do something you have no experience with EVEN IF YOU ARE LEGAL, because you are probably advertising, how knowledgable, experienced, well trained and board certified you are.
THAT IS NOT TRUE, IS IT? FALSE ADVERTISING IS ILLEGAL. ARE YOU READY TO GET A LAWYER? They want MONEY IN ADVANCE. IF YOU MAKE A BOOBOO it will be in the local papers. CAN YOU AFFORD TO LOSE YOUR PRACTICE? Lawyers want money in advance. Are you prepared for this?

Wow, lefty2g,
you said:" I DO NOT DO ANY LASER TREATMENTS BECAUSE I HAVE NO INSURANCE TO DO THIS. "

So you don't have any laser treatment experience, em.....so....what the... you effectively destroyed your own credibility.....I cannot see any logical links between your sentences and paragraphs...are you talking to the god or the voice in your head?

I'm interested in the answer...not necessarily any opinions or judging...just a good factual answer to chris 01's question...and then we could all move on...Anyone?

Yo CHRIs..... I attend as many meetings as possible and have PERSONALLY diuscussed lasers with one of the early researchers lon the subject, Dr. REX ANDERSON, from the Wellman light research laboratories at the Massachusetts General Hospital OF HARVARD U. HE NO LONGER DOES ANY LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND THIS FAMOUS ETHICAL HOSPITAL DOES NOT ALLOW ANYBODY TO TREAT ANYBODY BY LASER FOR ANYTHING UNLESS THEY ARE A BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, A DERMATOSURGEON OR A RESIDENT IN TRAINING WITH THE BOARD CERTIFIED SURGEON STANDING THERE TO SUPERVISE (OVERSEE) . MANY UNUSUAL THINGS CAN HAPPEN AND ONLY THE EXPERIENCED DOC CAN HELP.

IT IS LIKE YOU LEARNING TO DRIVE A CAR.YOU HAVE NO LICENSE YET, CONSEQUENTLY, YOU ARE DRIVING UNDER THE LICENSE OF YOUR TRAINER. THAT IS ONLY ONE REASON YOUR DAD SHOULD NEVER TRY TO TEACH YOU. AS THINGS HAPPEN. A DUAL CONTROL CAR IS THE ONLY WAY. MOST AUTO INSURANCE HAS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. LOOK IT UP. IT ALSO IS IN YOUR MALPRACTICE INSURANCE. THE COMP;ANIES DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES. LASERS AND ELECTROLOGY IS SURGERY.
I have more medical training than you would understand as i was trained by the US NAVY, college premed, and 30 years experience as a rep for one of the major drug companies who specialized in dermatology products , hormones, allergy, anti-biotics, tranquilizers, anti-depressants plus 10 years workining with a dermatologist as an electrologist. and some other stuff (shall I go on... there is no time).

IF IT IS GOOD FOR THE COMPANIES IT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU OR ME.

Yo CHRIS..... I attend as many meetings as possible and have PERSONALLY diuscussed lasers with one of the early researchers on the subject, Dr. ROX ANDERSON, from the Wellman light research laboratories at the Massachusetts General Hospital OF HARVARD U. WHEN IT HAPPENS IT MAY BE TOO LATE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT,.

IT IS LIKE YOU LEARNING TO DRIVE A CAR.YOU HAVE NO LICENSE YET, CONSEQUENTLY, YOU ARE DRIVING UNDER THE LICENSE OF YOUR TRAINER. THAT IS ONLY ONE REASON YOUR DAD SHOULD NEVER TRY TO TEACH YOU. AS THINGS CAN, AND DO, GO WRONG. A DUAL CONTROL CAR IS THE ONLY WAY. MOST AUTO INSURANCE HAS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. LOOK IT UP. IT ALSO IS IN YOUR MALPRACTICE INSURANCE. THE COMPANIES DO NOT TAKE THE CHANCES YOU ARE WILLING TO TAKE.. LASERS AND ELECTROLOGY IS SURGERY, AND ACCORDING TO FDA ELECTROLOGY MACHINES HAVE THE SAME RESTRICTIONS AS LASERS. YOU NEED A LICENSE BEFORE YOU CAN BUY ONE. FISHER STATES THIS ON THEIR ADVERTISING..

Forget about removal creams, laser and abrasion - these are painful, exhaustive and expensive.
