Physician Clinical Exchange > Pregnancy while working in a medical spa??

Are there any restrictions for working in a medical spa while pregnant?
There seems to be "no evidence" either way for everything I try to look up.
My main concern would probably be laser (Candela gentlemax).

I have had 3 of my medical estheticians get pregnant. There were no problems or complications for them while they were pregnant and all have healthy babies.

To be on the absolute safe side, however, I had each of them get a note from the OB/GYN that it was safe for them to deliver treatments. I made sure that each MD spelled out EACH one of the machines they were to be using to avoid any legal liability.

Other than getting more tired than usual, all 3 performed as well as before they were pregnant.

A note of caution- a letter from a physician stating operation of the laser will not harm a pregnant woman will not relieve you from legal harm should an injury occur. The liability should always fall on the manufacturer. Contact Candela and ask whether or not the laser may harm a pregnant operator.

Because lasers produce non-ionizing radiation, there is no conceivable harm to the baby. The Candela Gentlemax, however, has been known to cause shocking through the plastic handpiece (I know this doesn't sound possible, but there are recorded incidents). This is not to say you should be more careful because your tech is pregnant, rather the laser itself may be dangerous.

In the case of patient or user injury, or any incident that may cause concern, the best legal protection will come if you complete and FDA form 3500A for mandatory reporting of patient/user incidents.

All my sources say that there is no medical basis for a potential problem, but rather it's a legal 'high road' to avoid treating pregnant women. But as far as the laser operator, I would think it's even less of an issue.
