Skin Type: Pigment & Complexion > IPL for Asians and other ethnic patients

Hi,

I have found this forum very useful since I have been off my practice for quite a while and now planning to get back to it. My patients are mostly Asians and other ethnic groups, and they have a greater tendency to hyperpigment after laser, peels, etc. I have several questions:

1. In your opinion, which IPL is the least likely to cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?
2. Do you think Chinese/Taiwanese IPL's are at par with the FDA-approved IPL's?

Thank you very much.

frankly, IPL is the wrong choice for that type of population. You need an Nd:YAG 1064 laser, it's the gold standard for ethnic skin without a doubt and I've found the most gentle one (while still getting good outcomes) to be the Neo from Aerolase. I have been able to use it on the necks of men of skin type 6, a very sensitive application. Other YAGs are okay too but generally tend to be more painful and pricier. As far as Chinese/Taiwanese IPLs not FDA approved, good luck - I wouldn't dream of taking those kinds of risks. FDA approval is there for a reason, and local companies should be here for the long haul while you own the machine.

I have been reading many articles about the YAG, and most of them state that it has not been proven for long term results. Has this changed?

Sometimes I wonder what degree of experience the article writers have had. I've used the YAG quite extensively on hair removal, even on lighter skin, with long-term clearance (beyond 3-6 months). It's also great for several other things, but I think the focus here is on ethnic skin LHR? Or if the real question is whether you can avoid PIH and still get efficacy on LHR and other things, then hands-down YAG is a good approach.

I have managed a practice of 7 laser nurses and 40 different lasers. Our clientele consisted of 75% ethnic skin. There are a lot better alternatives to IPL for these including Nd:Yag but it really depends on the practice. If you want advice, I can discuss the purchase of the right laser for your practice and demographics.
