IPL & Laser Treatments > Hair removal laser advice

I guess this question has been asked several times in one form or another here. I am looking to starting hair removal along with pigmented lesions. I have done my research and I know their are many lasers that can do this to one extent or another. I think to do this with the best efficacy and most safety I am going to need two wavelengths. I haven't researched every line but was looking closely at Candela and Cynosure. After reading things here, I am a lttle concerned about Cynosures support. Also, how soon should I expect to have to replace any major parts? (beyond the laser payments, what should I budget for?) I considered buying used but that doesn't sound like such a good idea now. I now think leasing is the best....any feedback appreciated.

Questions for everyone currently using 1064 long pulsed Nd:YAG for hair removal: 1.) Do you recommend using cooling gel along with direct contact cooling? 2.) Do you feel you can successfully treat light brown/dartk blond and finer hair with 1064? 3.) Are you getting good results with patients with fine, black hair and med. brown skin? 4.) Any treatment "pearls" you have discovered? Thanks for your thoughts and sharing in advance.

med spa guy,
i am a medical assistant in an ob/gyn office and have been using the lyra laserscope 1064 for over 7 years now. the 10 mm spot size that only goes to 50 joules does not work well on finer hairs. however, if i use the 3 mm or 5 mm spot size and turn up the power i can successfully treat dark finer hairs on dark skin with a more treatments most of the time. i treat a lot of east indian population. the candela gentlease treats finer hairs better but it is still tricky treating finer hairs period. my lyra has contained cooling and i have to use an ultrasound gel as well. it really is not too painful.

Lisa: Thank you very much for the feedback. I have heard that some people are using 1064s WITHOUT ultrasound gel. Most of my research- Goldman, Godberg, Fitzpatrick, et al-- indicates that gel is a good idea for both hair removal AND leg veins. Gel not only "couples" the energy (prevents reflection) but also instantly "pulls" excess heat out of the tissue.

We are starting to use the MedLiteC6 for fine hairs. Keeping our fingers crossed. Cynosure says their Alexandrite 755 Laser works the best for fine hairs on skin types 1-4.

Hello.... I have been receiving treatments for hair removal close to 4 years now on all my face, I have always been hairier that usual but nothing serious, removed my mustache using waxing and had short, fine hairs on the sides of my face, all this changed once I got pregnant and I started growing hairs on my neck on the baseline on my chin following a beard like pattern and the hairs on the sides of my face actually start it moving closer to the cheeks, after I spoke to my gynecologist he told me this was normal on some women after the pregnancy and basically told me to wait around until got better, which I didn't... I first started with the Palomar IPL system, got my whole face shaved (as part of the procedure as I was told) which made my problem worse, the hairs are longer now and I have hairs in places that I didn't before, I did the treatments for 2 years and then moved on to laser treatments ( Lumenis dyode laser) which are not working either, I asked my dermatologist not to shave my face anymore and he told me it was fine that the treatment still worked ( Is this true??) By now I feel kind of desperate and I dont know what else to do.. Should I try another type of laser? electrolysis? I'm on birth control pills to control a PCO problem, nothing serious and I have gotten at least 5 hormonal tests (T3,T4, estrogen, free testosterone, and many more....) that show no hormonal unbalance ... ANY SUGGESTIONS? please help.... By the way, I live in San Jose, Costa Rica...
