We are beginning to offer the R20 tattoo removal method. My question is that an unwanted tattoo is not our typical client. Any marketing suggestions on how to reach this group?

We have been offering tattoo removal at our clinic for about 6 years now. I highly suggest offering a referral program with tattoo artists. Give them brochures and marketing materials and referral certificates to write their name on and when someone comes in and purchases a tattoo removal package referred by them the artist can receive a discounted service or we actually give the artists a free tattoo removal treatment for each new person that comes in who purchases a package. Every artist seems to have a tattoo they no longer want from their younger years or space they want to free up for something else. When we first started we advertised on a classic rock radio station and did a contest with them for the worst tattoo and gave away a free tattoo removal package. It gets the buzz going around town. Which laser did you purchase? We have just started offering R20. Hoping it truly removes the tattoos faster.

Can you tell us more about the R20? Are you in any way affiliated with this company?

R20 is not a laser. It is to repeat the laser procedure a few times 20 minutes apart. It is very time consuming and the patient will stay in your clinc for over 1 hour. It is a headache if you are doing a huge tattoo.

tula, I'm not related to this company in any way. From the research we have done before offering this treatment I have found it is only for black ink using a Qswitched NdYag or Alexandrite laser. It seems to be suggested for tattoos on the trunk of the body. I believe this may be due to the fact that there is a slightly higher risk for blistering and site specific swelling. I assume they may have had issues with swelling on appendages since running one setting on an ankle or foot can get pretty severe swelling. We have a medlite c-6 and pain does not seem to be an issue. The 2nd and 3rd treatments patients say hurt less than the initial first pass over.

We have the Medlite does work great on color tattoos but you can not do R20 protocol with the color settings and hand pieces.

I was at National Laser Institute in Scottsdale for 10 days. The tattoo removal technician said she made regular friendly visits to all tattoo 'parlors' in the area, even taking by goodies like cookies or cupcakes every couple of weeks to make friends with them so they will think of her first when someone needs tattoo removal. During a full day of tattoo removal training, we saw several (male & female) who wanted tattoos removed from "visible" places in order to be allowed to enter the military service, a young physician who needed a more 'professional' look than the dark design under his white sleeve indicated, a few who had bad undesirable unprofessional designs, one who wanted to wipe out one in order to make room for a new very artistic high quality design like the one on the opposite arm, and a couple who together wished to have an old girlfriend's name removed! There must be MANY people who want tattoos removed but do not know where/how. Ads in inexpensive local papers may work, and the rock radio station is a good idea.

We have a medlite c-6 from Hoya Conbio and have been very satisfied with it. The medlite does work great on color tattoos but you can not do R20 protocol with the color settings and handpieces. Not only does it treat tattoos but has protocol for non invasive laser skin rejuvenation (no downtime collagen remodeling), pigmented lesions, and what we call a laser peel (similar to an all over face IPL tx). It's a work horse. Constantly in use and we have had to have a tech come for maintenance an drepairs only twice in 6 years.

I am looking into “Skinial”, does anybody have any feedback or info on Skinial?

@stacey: I would be very skeptical for the simple fact that tattoo ink/dye particles generally reside in the dermis and they claim to remove portions of the epidermis at a 1 mm depth...nonetheless if you get results please let us know!

The c6 is a very good machine but it's lack of power limits it's capabilities once you start doing color and for delay situated ink . That's the same with other 1 joule lasers. There are several better lasers on the market today.
I would take issue with the person who claimed one service call in 6 years. Lasers fall out of specs for the same reason a baby cries. They have to be maintained! " it still works" really isn't " it still works right"

We have had great success with full removal of professional color tattoos with the c6. It does take more sessions but I have seen tattoos that have been removed with lasers with more power capabilities and it seems that people end up with scarring. Most our patients would rather do more sessions and have little to no scarring. I agree lasers should always have regular maintenance and checkups but our C6 has been a workhorse and never breaks down. Have you you worked with or heard much about the Fotona QxMax? I have some interest in this particular laser because it offers the capability to offer fractional treatments as well as tattoo and skin rejuvenation.

I'm using Alma Harmony Q-Switch 1064 YAG for black tattoos. And a Q-Switch 532 for color. It's working great. By the 3rd visit the tattoo is 50% lighter. I haven't removed a tattoo completely at this point. This is a brand new machine for me so my clients are scheduled for their 4th visit. So far it's amazing and my clients love it.

We also have been using the Revlite QS laser and just got the picosure laser from cynosure- it has helped tremendously with the green/blue/purple and blacks colored tattoos.

Our practice uses a Lutronic Q switch YAG laser and gets really great results with it.

We use the Revlite Si. It's 60% more powerful then a C6.Again, the power is necessary to get to larger spot sizes.
