Is it true that dermaplaning obtains better results than microdermabrasion? Is it profitable in your clinics? Is it worth it? Please share your experiences. I'm planning to attend a hands-on workshop very soon.

What are your thoughts on dermaplaning and microdermabrasion? Which treatment is superior?

I find the good old fashioned Dermaplane to be the best exfoliation/infusion treatment I can do. When you are able to efficiently scrape the surface of the skin, the serums you apply absorb right into the skin. The smooth texture of the skin is one that is unriveled in my opinion and patients LOVE it! It also removes vellus hair and leaves the skin smoother than anything I have experienced. Use it for myself and ALL my patients; and have great success; and it's costs is very low. A blade handle, blades and of course proper training.

I am wondering how much you charge for dermaplaning as a stand alone treatment? How long do you perform this service?

I charge $69 for dermaplaning of the face. If I do the neck and decollete as well its $89. I can do it all under 20 minutes. Cleanse, prep, dermaplane, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.

We charge $85 for dermaplaning only. When we combine it with other treatments and offer a package, we adjust accordingly. Patients love the results from dermaplaning and it really enhances all other treatments, so it almost sells itself!

I work in a derm clinic. I charge $75 for a combo Dermaplaning and glycolic peel.

I offer Dermaplaning in my office for $99.00 per treatment or if a patient buys a series of 3 they recieve 2 free. Once a patient has one treatment, they always come back for more. Makeup goes on like silk and the skin takes on a beautiful glow instantly. Patients are always grossed out, yet excited when I show them, at the end of treatment, the 4x4 I use to periodically clean my blade during the treatment. Microdermabrasion is a nice tool to use to lift some dead skin cells before a chemical peel to help get the chemical deeper into the epidermis but it is no match for Dermaplaning. I encourage my patients to do combo treatment series. Micro/Chem then 2 weeks later Dermaplaning. And repeat.... I have truly seen marked improvement in ALL my patients that follow this treatment plan. Just a note about doing a Chemical peel with Dermaplaning. I do not recommend it. If the Dermaplaning treatment is done correctly the skin is much to sensitive for even the toughest patients to tolerate a chemical peel at the same time. Hope this helps.

I don't love dermaplaning as much as you guys do. It's an ok treatment but I think it is a face shave. But some of my clients love it! I charge $90/treatment.

Do fillers create a contraindication for dermaplaning?. I would think not, but should there be a waiting period before performing this treatment? Thanks!

Yes you can perform Dermaplaning before doing Fillers on a patient. If a patient receives Fillers and then decides they want a Dermaplaning treatment I recommend waiting 2-3 days due to the risk of infection from tissue compromise at injection sites.

If someone is coming in for dermaplane and fillers the same day, I'll do the dermaplane first, followed by filler. If they've gotten filler prior, and they want dermaplane, I have them wait a week, just like scrham said.

Did you notice that clients have more hair growth from dermaplaning? In our clinic, we noticed that clients that did dermaplaning - their vellus hairs became darker and coarser and in some cases, more hairs.

@LMcQuay, honestly I don't do it on my clients enough to find out . I had talked with an esty that does a bunch and she basically admitted that she does laser on them when this starts to happen.

We charge $99 for DP only or Micropeel, which includes DP, Chemical, and Cryo for $150. We use the Skin Ceuticals/BioMedics protocols. The patients feel great after. And as far as the "more hair growth", 3 words...old wives tale. Shaving doesn't create more hair. You're cutting the hair at the thickest part so the hair is now blunted instead of tapered. Hair is also darker at the base than at the tip so it may appear slightly darker. But the hair was always there.

While clients with lots of facial hair may not be the best candidates for DP, I believe for most skin types the results outweigh the change in hair texture. Any change in hair texture or growth is due to cutting the hair and stimulating the dermis which can create "healthier hair". After one full facial waxing, the hair growth returns to normal or less.

Here in NYC, we charge $150 for the dermaplaning, lactic acid, serums, high frequency and collagen mask. You can also add microcurrent if they are not too sensitive for another $40 -$50!

Can estheticians in California legally perform dermaplaning?

@ Ross: If this is skincare & injectable appoinment in the same day - skincare is always done first. Dermaplaning afterwards is fine.

We also charge 150. but that includes a micropeel once finished with the DP and CO2 to finish following extractions.

hackerman, I have heard that it's not legal for estheticians in CA to perform unless they are working under a doctor's supervision such as a med spa. I would also check with your insurance provider such as Associated Skin Care Professionals to make certain that your insurance covers this treatment since the laws vary state to state.

I personally use the Dermafiles for exfoliation. I'm an authorized distributor/educator for Dermafile. They are small diamond-encrusted files that come in three grits--fine, medium and coarse. They work great combined with peels. Also, they are legal in all 50 states.

If I do the derma planing along with a complete facial, or other treatment, I charge the same amount. I use a sodium pac/hylauronic mask that is custom blended for me by the Skin Institute in Miami.

Dermaplaning is very popular here in California. If this is done correctly, it is more gentle on skin than some of the diamond tips. You just need to not make a lot of striations- a nice wisping motion works great. You'll get the hang of it. For those who think its a major procedure it's really very simple and very effective. As others have said, your pricing should definitely depend on what else you will include in the treatment. We offer a quickie dermaplaning at $85 (same price as a lunchtime microderm session) that is just cleanse, dermaplane, serum, moisturizer, and SPF. Then, we have dermaplaning as one option in our advanced facial, which is $145/$165 (depending on practitioner) and includes deep cleanse, dermaplaning, extractions, high frequency, LED light, mask, and microcurrent or ultrasonic permeation. This is perceived as an extremely high-value treatment in our market.

I am about to start adding Dermaplaning in my practice. I wanted to ask everyone what post-treatment derums have you found to be the most effective or have you seen the best results with (on your clients)? Just trying to find a good product line to buy the serums from (that work best with Dermaplaning). Thank you for your input!

I almost always use HydroPeptide's Serum. It's full of peptides and includes EGF and results in really beautiful results.

If employed by a physician in the state of Texas and certified in dermaplaning would this fall under physicians laws with the Texas Medical Board and not the TDLR?
