I am considering buying a used Starlux 500 but am worried about getting a lemon. The Palomar rep told me that the warranty left on the used machine is not transferable. I am thinking that perhaps I should just buy new to eliminate any worries. Do you have any experience buying used lasers? Any advice? Thanks.

If you purchase a used Starlux 300 or 500, there is a 25K "certification" fee that Palomar will charge you to inspect the box. Cutera does the same with thier lasers as well. This certification fee will be the only way that you can have the system serviced by the manufacturer. This certification fee is the only way to transfer ownership according to Palomar. So be wary.

The first problem is that you are talking to the sales rep. Find a used starlux on the open market. Gather info about the system. Year, make , model and most importantly...the serial number. Then talk to one of the two guys in the service department at Palomar and ask THEM what the total price would be to have service on the system you buy used. Your rep is not the one that would give you a quote on how much it would cost to have the system serviced......your sales rep has no clue. Just the service guys have that information.

I am not paying a company 25K for 2 hours of supposed "certification". The system has performed very well and really have no complaints. I use a Starlux 500 in addition to my Cutera Xeo platform as well. One thought would be that I am sure Palomar or other laser manufacturers will have used or refurbished systems that they may sell....and then you wouldn't have to worry about the recertification baloney.

I bought a used Starlux pulsed light and laser system with the Lux RS, LuxY and LuxG hand pieces. It is a tremendous work horse. I am looking for a hands on training course or just a seminar explaining the various uses, fluences, etc. in the San Diego, CA area. (Even Arizona is fine.) Thanks

If I had to choose one and only one I would go for the Starlux. Overall I am more pleased with clinical efficacy and speed with the Palomar Starlux. But, the one thing that Palomar lacks is some of the marketing. If you are looking to start and aesthetics practice from scratch it may be easier to do that with the Cutera. It is much easier to market the "Pearl and Titan" than it is to market Lux 1540 or Deep IR....what does the consumer know about those Palomar treatment descriptions. But if you are going to do mostly photo rejuvenation and hair removal, I would recommend hands down the Starlux for speed and results. I am not knocking the Cutera in anyway, because it is the best and most versatile NdYag on the market. One thing that bugs me about the Cutera is you have to fly a technican in from 1000 miles away to replace a $ 550 water filter and pay another $1100 on top of that amount. With the Palomar, you can replace them your self instead of having a Cutera water filter expert fly for four hours, get a rental car and charge your for Cutera's need for revenue.

Is the Starlux safe for rejuvenation for skin types 4and 5? Am looking to start a practice and would appreciate some info.

Starlux is safe for treatments using G hand piece for skin types I-IV. 1540 fractional is safe for I-III and IV-V with hydroquinone 4% pre and post treatment. I have not used Deep IR on any skin types other than I-III.

If you are looking for a versatile clinical based unit and platfrom you should look at Lumenis and or Sction first. Lumenis invented IPL technology and it is a solid product. Sction BBL is also a very good system. Cutera however makes one of the best ND YAG on market stay away from there IPL and other modalites as they are suspect at best.

Palomar is a third place as far as IPL it is a capable unit for photorejuvination however the ND YAG is very lacking as well as the other options.

I agree that Cutera has a superior NdYag on its Xeo platform and is superior to the Palomar. But what specifically makes the Lumenis the best as far as IPL?

I own Palomar Starlux 500. It is simply amazing! You won't regret purchasing this, I routinely perform a wide array of treatments--from acne scar treatments, permanent hair reduction, spider veins and photofacials, This piece is very reliable. The company has excellent customer service. To top it off, it has no consumables. Patients claim that they are comfortable after the treatment.

I bought a used Palomar 500 Starlux. Great system. I use a third party service group for my service. Very reasonable. Everyone should consider this. I have a friend with a unit for sale. Ring him up.
