Medical Spa Business Forum > Start up Costs for a New Medical Spa

I'm currently creating a business plan for a medical spa. I'm in a start, run and grow your business class and i'm also a nursing student so I need some average numbers on variable and fixed costs. I plan on renting a facility and leasing equipment. I also need average costs for marketing. Keep in mind this is just a business plan I don't plan on actually opening a medical spa until i'm a ARNP. Thank you to anyone who can help out. I'm also located in Wisconsin if that helps.

Here you go: $5k.

Oie, common girl. Questions like how should I build my business plan out are far to complicated and time consuming to get responses online. You're asking for huge answers that no one agrees on for a business plan that you have no intention of following until you get your ARNP?

I would suggest (warmly) that you do the leg work and educate yourself and then ask very specific questions. You'll have much better luck.

I think this answer could be done better by directing her to a good link instead of making fun.

Samantha,

While much of the financial information and planning tools you are looking may be "out there", you are more likely to use the most appropriate information once you have a clear intention and concept definition in your business plan. I'd be happy to offer you a free initial consultation to get you headed in an appropriate direction.

Its very expensive, that is why almost 80% fail within 3 years. Lets simply talk lasers, you have to have quality lasers even "leasing" them will cost you more than you think. Unless you want a load of unhappy patients you will need quality not something from Asia bought on ebay for $200-$1000. An FDA approved system lets say for hair would cost you at a min $50k if you want both alex and Yag then the cost is over $100k. Now figure a 5 year lease you are talking around $1200-$2500 a month. If you plan on maintaining these systems then after a year you have to purchase a maint package which runs about 10% of the list price this can mean an increase in monthly expenses anywhere from $800-$1200 depending what you lease. This is just for these lasers, if you want to do microderm, fat reduction, etc you will need others. Also don't believe that ipl will give dependable results for hair studies show either the diode laser or the popular alex/yag are most reliable.

That is a good starting point for your costs. Now you have to add in rent, gas, electric, supplies, computers and a program to keep track of your patients, office furniture chairs, beds, sterilization mechanisms, staff?

Advertising is where a lot of places falter, blow all the capitol on lasers and making the office look fancy and no money for ads. The ads are almost as expensive as the lasers depending on your route.

Best to really research and know what you are getting into before spending

In addition to the cost of the equipment figure on 10-15% of your anticipated annualized revenues for the 1st three years going towards marketing. Most states require a Medical Director (fees vary) and you will also need both liability and medical malpractice insurance as well. What about support? Who answers the phone? Most surveys show that you run a 46% chance of a potential patient calling another center unless the call is answered by a live person. How about a medical billing system, copier, credit card processing, room equipment & build out of some or all of the office space.

Last time I checked the capital outlay to equip a 4 treatment room MedSpa including build out was north of $600,000 and I'd imagine that it's higher today.

Nickal
I never fully added it up but I bet you are right. The total cost would be near 600k
for what you describe.
