Esthetician & Skin Care Products > Dermafile vs Microdermabrasion

Recently, I've been hearing a lot of raves about Dermafiles--how this treatment is better than microdermabrasion. Can anyone attest to that?

The Dermafiles are indeed a great alternative to microdermabrasion, Pts love the fact that there is no tugging on the skin from suction, it's crystal-free and they see visible, instant results.

I'd be interested to hear more.. I'm considering the derma file.

I perform an enzyme treatment before I use the dermafile resulting to a smooth, polished skin. You should try this too!

Tried the file on myself and not sure I used it right. Are you supposed to see peeling or flaking? I did not. Love to hear how you are using them and how much you charge for a treatment.

Just yesterday I decided to try a hydrating enzyme mask after the dermafile and the results were fabulous.

Dermafiles are less expensive than microdermabrasion. Less mess too! Very comparable results to microderm. I think these can replace microdermabrasion.

Dermafile is a safe, natural, holistic alternative to chemical peels and microdermabrasion. I use Dermafile together with fruit enzymes and the results are amazing!

What are your thoughts on microdermabrasion? I feel that it is overly aggressive because it pulls the skin and causes broken capillaries. I prefer using chemical peels over this treatment. Or should I look into other options?

I think the suction of the microdermabrasion can damage the skin. I love chemical peels as well. I feel like cocktailing lactic acid with a physical exfolianta can give your clients the same results, but in a safe way.

If done correctly, microdermabrasion can give amazing results especially if you have a great product line to use with it. Machines abrade differently, so far the best one is the Power Peel machine.. Gives very even results and you don't have to worry of the hand piece scratching the client.

I feel the same way. We have used the Diamond Tome microdermabrasion. However, it's not for everyone's skin type. I love chemical peels. There are such a variety of peels and acids that can be used on every skin type. Not to mention it does much more than superficial exfoliation.

I always love to hear these positive comments about the Dermafiles! Be creative with this little tool. I know someone who uses them on top of an enzyme to scrub the enzyme in. Definitely know your clients skin before trying this. They were made to be used on clean dry skin. Try a peel afterwards!

It amazes me how many new clients I get that have a lot of broken capillaries and report getting frequent microdermabrasions. Personally, I refuse to do micro on anyone showing signs of weakened capillary walls or over the age of 50. That's just my own guideline. Why risk it when there are so many good alternatives? Once I explain why and that we can get the same results using other methods they are happy and wonder why others performed the treatment.

I agree with Clark S. I perform a lot of facials on a wide variety of ethnic skin and rarely use microdermabrasion. I have found other methods of exfoliation to be more effective and much less traumatic.

My opinion is a long as you are trained correctly and use products that are healing after, microdermabrasion is one of the best and least invasion processes.

I love microdermabrasion. However, it is a fact that as we age our capillary walls weaken. While, micro may not cause broken capillaries in younger healthy skin it most certaily can in aging skin no matter how well trained the provider is. There are many other health related contraindications as well. And, if you are going to turn the suction down low enough for it not to be an issue are you really performing microdermabrasion at all? Why risk it? I get fantastic results with microdermabrasion, it's true, but I also get phenominal results with other less risky treatments.

I have nothing against microdermabrasion. I feel it's especially beneficial on older, thicker skin. Yes, the benefits are marvelous and results are anywhere from immediate to within a week. My concern is, long term. Microdermabrasion or aggressive exfoliations can be detrimental on especially, younger skin You have to look at long term results. Some clients are "exfoliation junkies". Sure, it's especially profitable to comply and take advantage of this income, and that's a shame. Those clients and those that think, "more is better", 10 years down the line, will end up with skin that presents with, at least, major hyper pigmentation and free radical damage. They won't age gracefully.

I use the Dermafile in our clinic. In many cases it is a better choice for physical exfoliation than Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion. I also sometimes use a combination of them. For instance, you can plane down a keratosis while you can't with Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion. I'll also use (judiciously) on areas of pigmentation after other forms of exfoliation. It is very good for the nose area (using cotton swabs to invert around the nasal area. The dermafile or dermaplaning come in very nicely as a prequel to applying anesthetic cream before a CIT treatment.

Hi everyone! I am a Medical Aesthetician and I have a Microderm machine (Mega Peel) Hydrafacial Machine, Dermafiles, and I do Dermaplaning. You have to analyze the skin thoroughly and ask a lot of questions if you must to tailor the perfect treatment for a client.

I totally agree that Microdermabrsion seems to be too agressive for some skin types. I prefer Chemical Peels for myself as well as my clients. Especially my older patients. The skin is so easily bruised and fragile.

Moderation is the key for any aggressive exfoliation, regardless which one. Exciting the regeneration of cells and stimulating collagen synthesis is beneficial, yes, but we have to keep in mind, we are injuring the skin. The barrier function is there for a reason. The insult the skin receives will eventually lead to hyper-pig, tewl and scarring during its healing process, if abused.

My thoughts are it is all about operator technique. Microdermabrasion is a great source as long as one understands vacuum and crystal application. Some brands do not give you the option of adjusting crystal flow and most machine work better on high vacuum for motor reasons. Acid peels are exceptional too again it depends on the education from the operator. Acid peels can have their own array of concerns; such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, unnecessary stress for that which may impair immunity response. I personally think no application should be in competition with one another, there are many ways of safely working combination for great skin care. Bottom line it is all about the machine and the application from the professional.
