In looking at the Palomar Starlux 300 vs the Starlux 500, I'm curious about if the community here thinks that the 500 is worth the added expense. It looks to me as thought I could save $25k by going with and older 300. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

I recently looked at the Palomar systems but did not purchase. I think they are a good system and I would have gone with the 500. The reasons are is that the 500 is faster and you will not be able to use all of the applications.

I think you will see Palomar basically outdate the 300 over time. I asked the rep this same question and from what I understand some of the new heads are not compatible with the 300 and many of the new heads in development will not be available for the 300.

Amen LH: But if you're looking for a IPL to do a combo procedure the 300 may fit the bill (at the right price).. Palomar stops developing new applications to fit old platform once it developes a new platform. So, IPL-wize the 300 (or este-lux for that matter) may be a great choice. I try to stay a generation back in technology unless there's something groundbreaking.. " Buy value or create it" thats my mantra (borrowed from Warren Buffett)

I have recently purchased the StarLux 300. Several of my patients have mod-severe melasma, any thoughts and/or settings?

Are there any regulatory experts out there? I am trying to figure out how Palomar can keep "jacking up" their power each year without having to submit a new 510(k). Supposedly if you "put a new and more powerful engine in the automobile" you are supposed to submit a new - revised - 510(k) submission accompanied with new IEC 60601-1 test reports, etc. I have asked the FDA people this question but they never respond. If this sounds incredibly boring to you you can imagine how exciting my life is!

I'm interested in any comments (good and bad) R/T Palomar's laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation system. It's a first IPL/laser purchase for a small office practice and a bit overwhelming. Other systems we are considering are Cutera and Cynosure. Thanks for any first hand info. It is much appreciated (Please...no reps).

I have purchased Palomar equipment since the EsteLux and have upgraded since. Recently I just purchased the StarLux500 and have been very happy with the speed and the Lux1540. My rep tells me they are coming out with a new fractional ablative handpiece as well. To me, it does not make sense to purchase many different lasers when with one system you can do everything and have the ability to upgrade.

TM: If a med spa wants to generate maximum revenues one might question the advisability of tying up $200,000 in a single piece of capital equipment which limits the clinic to being able to book only a single treatment room each day. I am able to run four treatment rooms each day after making a similar ($200,000) investment-- I simply purchased more affordable devices. It is a similar choice we make with automobiles. I can purchase a brand new Saturn for myself, my wife and my son for less than a single Lexus! Just because a device is expensive does not necessarily mean it will make you more money.

I agree with med spa guy. I do not want all my money tied up in one piece. I want multiple rooms going at the same time. Just do not but cheap junk. To some degree you get what you pay for.

LH: Can you recommend to me some skin care centers that utilize the Palomar Starlux 500 in the Portland, OR area? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

L.H. and anyone else using the Star Lux: Can anyone confirm what the rep rate is for basic IPL treatments with Star Lux (i.e. hair removal and photofacials)? Is the rate constant regardless of the energy level delivered? As you know, with many lasers (and some IPLs) the rep rate drops as the energy fluence delivered increases. Oftentimes the sales reps do not disclose this up front and the unfortunate buyer finds out after the fact that his hair removal treatments-- for example-- will takes twice as long as he had planned, etc.

I have had a horrible experience with palomar. Both the company and the IPL. Don't buy it.

I have the Starlux 500. In the worst case scenario, using the R Hand Piece (which is pretty big at 16mm x 46 mm), at the maximum setting I use (45j/cm2 over 100 ms) the rep rate is about 1 pulse every 3 seconds. Using about a 30-50% over lap, I find that I can do a average back in 3-45 minutes and full legs in about 1 hour. I compared the time it takes to do a full back at maximum settings with other machines. The Starlux 500 is one of fastest. Furhermore, it works great.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the difference at this time between the starlux 500 and 300 is mostly speed with the 500 being the faster one?

How does the IR and 1540 compare to the Portrait plasma machine? If you have expereince with this.

I have a medilux I'm considering upgrading or getting either an Alma soprano for hair removal or a combination of a startlux and laser of somekind.

Two years ago I was quoted a price of $85,900 for the basic Star Lux platform with only one "head" and approx. $13K for each additional IPL head, etc. For the Nd:YAG (1064) laser hand piece I was quoted $28,000, and $40,000 for the Er:YAG (2940) laser hand piece. In a recent Aesthetics Buyers Guide I see the price for the 2940 fractional hand piece at $40,000 but the Lux 1064 is listed at $79,900. Does anyone know what it would cost to purchase a Star Lux with only a 1064 laser hand piece? I was never told the price for the console only. I doubt that the price of the 1064 hand piece increased from $28K to $80K in two years?? Does anyone have this information? I also see that they are listing prices for their LuxIR fractional head and Lux 1540 fractional heads at around $95,000 each but am confused as to whether or not the console is included at this price. Either Palomar is VERY expensive or they are providing mixed up information to the ABG. Can anyone clarify?

Do most of your spas using the Starlux have a medical director, doctor or nurse?

I need to know how much the palomar lux 500 runs for, I am trying to buy it for a Spa in South America, ant the prices seem very high, I would like to compare it to the US prices.

I can tell you what I have paid on both a 300 and 500. I was told the 300 list (2.5 yrs ago) was 81.K with one IPL HP. we purchased it with 3 IPL and nd-YAG for $120K. About a year ago we got a 500 w/1540 (fractional) for 100K, but were told list was 115K, i think. Of course all the latin countries have duty and VAT issues so that can change the price a lot.

I am looking into purchasing a refurbished Palomar or Lumenis laser for primarily IPL and Laser Hair treatment with an option to upgrade to fractionated laser at some point...any thought on superior unit, I hear that Lumenis is best for IPL...?

I have 5 years experience with IPL systems - Ellipse Flex which has only been available in the US recently I believe, Starlux 300, and Energist, as well as Lightsheer laser.
The Stalux is a great hair workhorse - effective and comfortable, esp with the large red handpiece. The energies quoted by the company are nothing like those actually produced. I have had the unit professionally meter tested and the output is something like 30-50% of that claimed. This though is a chronic IPL problem. The Ellipse (DDD) is an awesome unit for vascular and pigment work. It is VERY powerful and needs to be used by well-trained people. The Ellipse has the very best IPL research done by Scandinavian authors and available in the usual derm journals.

I don't know what the price of a new medilux system is, but we have a Medilux that has 3 handpieces (R,Y,G) and only 25,000 total pulses that we are trying to sell. At this point we would take 20K. If you are interested send me your email address and I can send you pics.

Yes, I do. Especially if compared to medilux. I don't have long term experience with Starlux though. However, I still like having only a single handpiece, small spot adaptors and unlimited handpiece replacement for 3 years or as long as under warranty. Plus we were able to get 7 filters. With that said, the medilux is a great starter IPL at a lower price point. It's very easy to use.

We are considering buying a Palomar IPL.

4. Is the training and the continuing education good?
5. Is there any company sponsored and supported "clinical exchange"?

I would watch Palomar as they as a company are starting to take on traits of Cutera. They are starting to not support any systems on the secondary market unless they go through them and re-certify them at a huge cost. They are one of the better IPLs but they nickel and dime you for consumables. Remember you have to replace the heads if they break down at a pro-rated cost. I just want you to go in with your eyes wide open.

The good new about Palomar is that there is one warranty for the base system. The bad new is a separate warranty for different heads like the 1540. Although if one breaks down, you can still use the other heads. I am trying to sell my Starlux 300 with RS, Y, V, Green and 1540 after several years because I have gotten busy and want multiple room going with different machines. Location NYC

Sorry to be late in responding - the Energist unit I used was a loaner from the company and I used it for 4 weeks.
I was quite impressed with it. It uses a pulse stacking system to achieve a reasonable total fluence. I was a bit concerned about this but the clinical results were very good, both for pigment and vascular treatments. For hair it was too slow to recharge between pulses so I eventually went for the Starlux as hair removal was the main aim, combined with portability.
No IPL gets near the DDD Ellipse for all-round applications, but it is a big unit and not portable.

I am planning to buy a Starlux 500 for my new business. Is Trilux worth it? Someone with experience, please reply. Its a lot of investment, right?
